On November 18, 2025, I had the wonderful opportunity to lead a Public Speaking for Seniors session hosted by the Malvern Family Resource Centre (MFRC) in collaboration with U+ Community. It was such a meaningful experience—one filled with learning, laughter, thoughtful conversations, and genuine connection.
U+ Community’s Public Speaking for Seniors program is designed to empower older adults by strengthening their confidence, communication skills, and creating opportunities for self-expression. Through guided discussions, interactive activities, and practical speaking exercises, the program encourages seniors to find their voice, share their experiences, and stay socially engaged. Being part of a program that uplifts seniors in such a meaningful way is something I’m truly grateful for.
We began the session by introducing a few simple but effective public speaking strategies. We talked about how to build confidence, structure your thoughts, and speak with intention. The seniors were incredibly engaged, eager to practice, and open to learning new techniques. Their willingness to step outside their comfort zone was truly inspiring.
As the session came to an end, we closed with a Table Topics activity featuring a bold and timely question: “Is artificial intelligence good for society?” The seniors shared insightful perspectives, personal stories, and creative arguments. It was refreshing to hear such a wide range of viewpoints—some skeptical, some optimistic, all thoughtful. Their lived experiences added so much depth to the conversation, and I found myself learning just as much from them as they did from the session.
To show our appreciation, we gave out plushies and tote bags at the end—tokens of gratitude for their participation and warm energy. Seeing their smiles made the moment even more special.
Overall, the session was a wonderful reflection of what U+ Community’s Public Speaking for Seniors program strives to achieve: confidence-building, meaningful connection, and the celebration of every voice. Watching the seniors support one another, speak boldly, and embrace the activities reminded me why this work matters so deeply. I left feeling inspired, grateful, and excited to return next month to continue growing alongside them.
